Get to Know Arkadelphia, Arkansas

The city of Arkadelphia is located in Clark County, Arkansas, situated at the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains. As of the census that was held in the year 2010, there are about 10,714 people calling this city their home. Back in the year 1803, a man named John Hemphill settled in this part of the country, and became the operator of a nearby salt works (known to be Arkansas’ first industry). What was once known as Blakelytown until 1839, it is possible that the name “Arkadelphia” came to be when the people merged the Ark – from the name of the state – with the Greek word “Adelphia” meaning “brother/place.”

Today, Arkadelphia mixes history with modernity with its interesting places such as the Arkadelphia Commercial Historic District, Clark County Courthouse, Arkadelphia Confederate Monument, and the Reynolds Science Center, just to name a few.
